Blueberry Gin Cocktail
Description
The Blueberry Gin Cocktail starts with muddled fresh mint and blueberry simple syrup at the bottom of the glass, providing a sweet and aromatic foundation. A touch of lemon juice brightens the flavors, while crushed ice chills and dilutes the drink slightly as it melts. Ginger beer is carefully floated over the syrup to add a gently spicy, fizzy layer. Gin is then floated on top for a botanical aroma and clean finish.
The drink's layered presentation is achieved by slowly pouring liquids over the back of a spoon to keep them separate. Garnishes like sugared lemon rims, skewered blueberries, lemon twists, or mint sprigs enhance both appearance and aroma, inviting the drinker to stir before sipping.
The simple syrup can be prepared by simmering fresh or frozen blueberries with sugar and water, optionally infused with mint for extra flavor. The method emphasizes layering liquids by density and viscosity to preserve the visual separation, making it a cocktail that combines flavor and presentation methodically.
Ingredients
Blueberry Gin Cocktail
- 2 oz blueberry simple syrup
- 3-4 mint leaves
- 1/8 lemon wedge
- 2-3 oz ginger beer or mixer of choice
- 1 1/2 - 2 oz gin I used Empress 1908 Gin to give it this beautiful hue
- Optional Garnish | Lemon Sugared Rim Skewered blueberries, twist of lemon and/or mint sprig
Blueberry Simple Syrup
- 1 cup cane sugar I use organic, all natural cane syrup
- 1 cup water filtered
- 1 cup blueberries fresh, washed (or frozen)
- mint optional, small handful; fresh
Instructions
- Place 3-4 mint leaves in the bottom of an old-fashioned glass
- Pour 2 oz Blueberry syrup over the mint and muddle gently with a muddler, or use end of a wooden spoon.
- Squeeze in 1/8 of a lemon, or to taste. Fill the glass with cubed or crushed ice (I like crushed in my cocktails, so whirred some ice in my blender).
- Lay a tablespoon upside down on top of the ice and slowly pour a few ounces of the ginger beer (or mixer) to float it on top of the blueberry syrup mixture.
- Finally, slowly pour the gin over the back of the same spoon, floating it on top of the other two layers.
- Garnish with blueberries, lemon twist and mint sprig if desired. Stir before sipping.
Notes
- Start layering liquids with the heaviest blueberry syrup first to achieve separation.
- Use the back of a spoon to carefully float ginger beer and gin, pouring slowly to maintain layers.
- For a sugared lemon rim, rub lemon zest sugar mixture around the glass, then roll the rim in sugar before adding ingredients.
- The blueberry simple syrup can be adjusted in quantity and mixers swapped for different flavor profiles or festive color effects.
