Blueberry Lemonade
Description
This blueberry lemonade begins by blending fresh blueberries with sugar and part of the water until smooth. The puree can be strained to remove skins and seeds for a clearer beverage or left unstrained to retain more nutrients and texture. The puree is then combined with freshly squeezed lemon juice and additional water to adjust strength and sweetness.
The flavor showcases the natural berry sweetness along with the bright acidity of lemon, creating a balanced and thirst-quenching drink. Optional garnishes include lemon slices and whole blueberries for visual appeal. Using frozen blueberries can help keep the drink cold without dilution.
Variations include substituting strawberries or blackberries for blueberries or replacing sugar with honey. A splash of vodka can convert this into a spiked lemonade. Heating lemons slightly before juicing can make extracting juice easier.
Ingredients
- 2 cups blueberries fresh
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ⅔ cup lemon juice freshly squeezed
- 4 cups water divided, cold
- lemon if desired, lemon sliced, for garnish
- Blueberry if desired, lemon sliced, for garnish
Instructions
- Place the blueberries, sugar and 1 cup water in a blender. Blend on medium-high speed for about 1 minute, until the blueberries are completely pureed. Strain the blueberry puree through a fine mesh sieve (or skip this step if you don't mind small pieces of blueberry in your lemonade).
- Combine the blueberry puree with lemon juice and the remaining 3 cups of water. Add more water, if desired. Stir well, and chill. Serve over ice.
Notes
- Substitute strawberries or blackberries for blueberries to vary the fruit flavor.
- Adjust sugar, lemon juice, and water to taste for a personalized balance of sweetness and tartness.
- Honey can be used instead of sugar as a natural sweetener.
- A splash of vodka can be added to create an alcoholic version.
- Serving in mason jars with ice, lemon slices, and blueberries adds a decorative touch.
- Straining the blueberry puree is optional depending on texture preference.
- Frozen blueberries can be used to keep the lemonade cold without watering it down.
- Warming lemons briefly makes juicing simpler by releasing more juice.
