Blueberry Lemonade
Description
Blueberry Lemonade involves making a fresh blueberry puree by simmering blueberries with water until they soften, then pureeing them until smooth. This puree is then mixed into a blend of water, fresh-squeezed lemon juice, and sugar, adjusting the amount of blueberry puree to taste. The resulting drink is tart yet sweet, with the fruity depth of the blueberries enhancing the classic lemonade. Serving chilled over ice maintains its refreshing quality, making it suitable for warmer days or casual gatherings.
The flavor balance depends on the lemon and sugar quantities, so adjusting sweetness with sugar or an alternative sweetener allows for personal preference. The puree can be made in advance and kept chilled, simplifying assembly when ready to serve.
For single servings, the recipe scales down with a proportion of lemon juice, water, sugar, and blueberry puree, facilitating easy preparation by the glass. Frozen berries can substitute fresh if fresh berries are not available, although fresh berries will yield the best flavor and texture.
Ingredients
- 4 1/2 cups water
- 1 cup lemon juice juice of 5-6 lemons, fresh squeezed
- 1/2 cup sugar (or an appropriate amount of your favorite alternative)
- 1 1/2 cups blueberry puree (recipe below)
blueberry puree
- 1 pint blueberries fresh
- 1/2 cup water
Instructions
- First make the blueberry puree ~ rinse the berries and put them in a saucepan with the water. Bring to a boil, then lower the heat, cover, and cook, stirring often, for 3 minutes or until softened and deep purple. Puree the mixture in a blender until completely smooth. Put in the refrigerate to chill.
- To make the lemonade, put the water and lemon juice into a pitcher, add the sugar, and stir to dissolve. Add most of the blueberry puree (you may not want to use all the puree, taste and adjust the amount to your liking.) Mix well and chill until ready to serve.
Notes
- You can prepare single servings by mixing one cup of water with the juice of one lemon, one tablespoon of sugar, and about three tablespoons of blueberry puree, then chill and serve over ice.
- Frozen berries are an acceptable substitute for fresh berries in the blueberry puree, though fresh gives better flavor.
- This recipe can be adapted by replacing blueberries with other berries like raspberries, blackberries, or strawberries for different flavors.
