Boiled Cabbage

Boiled Cabbage is prepared by cutting a small green cabbage into wedges and boiling it in salted water until tender. Optionally, bacon drippings or slices of bacon can be added for smoky flavor. The cooked cabbage is drained, then topped with melted butter and seasoned with salt and pepper, creating a simple, mild-flavored side dish with soft texture and subtle richness from the butter and optional bacon.

Description

This recipe begins by trimming any discolored outer leaves from the cabbage, cutting it into wedges with the core intact to hold each piece together during cooking. The cabbage is boiled in salted water until just tender, with an option to add bacon fat or cooked bacon slices to the boiling water to infuse a smoky taste.

Once boiled, the cabbage is drained well and finished with melted butter, along with salt and black pepper to taste. The result is tender cabbage that retains structure, softened but still holding shape, complemented by the smoothness of butter and seasoning.

Boiled cabbage serves well alongside meat dishes, potatoes, or as part of a larger meal. It fits into traditional or simple home-style meals requiring a vegetable element with mild flavor and easy preparation.

For variation, replacing water with broth can add further depth. Chopping the cabbage into strips can reduce boiling time, which should be adjusted accordingly. Topping with crispy bacon bits can provide textural contrast and added flavor.
