Boiled Peanuts
Description
Boiled Peanuts require raw, fresh (not dried) peanuts, soaked in water to loosen any dirt, then rinsed before cooking. They are boiled in a large quantity of water seasoned heavily with salt, commonly 2 ounces of salt in 2 gallons of water, to infuse the nuts with flavor while softening them. The boiling is maintained at a low to medium simmer, with doneness checked every 20 to 30 minutes.
Cooking time varies significantly based on the peanuts’ age and size, ranging from one hour to as long as four hours. The goal is a texture that is soft enough to eat easily but still firm enough to offer a slight bite, not mushy. Boiled Peanuts are typically enjoyed warm as a snack, appreciated for their unique texture and salty, nutty taste.
