Boiling Corn on the Cob
Description
Boiling Corn on the Cob highlights fresh or frozen corn kernels cooked to a tender texture without becoming mushy. The husk and silks are removed before boiling the cobs in water for five to seven minutes until just cooked. Salt is omitted from the boiling water to preserve the corn's texture, with salt added afterward. Butter melts atop the cooked corn, creating a rich, smooth contrast to the kernels' slight crunch. Flavor variations can include sprinkling with garlic or onion powder, herbs, seasoning blends, or grated cheese once the corn is cooked.
The simplicity of boiling corn makes it easy to prepare as a side dish suitable for meals where fresh corn is desired, whether for summer barbecues or casual family dinners. The quick cooking time keeps the kernels firm yet tender, ideal for immediate serving while retaining the corn's natural sweetness.
For leftovers, store the corn in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days. The method can be used for both fresh and frozen corn on the cob, requiring the same boiling time. Overcooking may cause the corn to become mushy, so timing is important to achieve the preferred texture.
Ingredients
- 4 corn on the cob
- 4 tsp butter
- ⅛ tsp salt
Instructions
- Remove the husk and silks from the corn on the cob.
- Fill a large pot half full with water. Bring the water to a boil over medium heat.
- Place the peeled corn on the cob in the pot. Cover the pot and return to a boil. Boil for 5-7 minutes.
- Remove the corn on the cob from the pot and place on a platter. Serve with butter and salt.
Notes
- Do not add salt to the boiling water, as it can toughen the corn kernels.
- Boil the corn for 5 to 7 minutes to keep the kernels tender yet firm; avoid overcooking to prevent mushiness.
- Frozen corn on the cob can be boiled using the same method and cooking time as fresh corn.
- Add seasonings or toppings such as herbs, garlic powder, or grated Parmesan cheese after cooking, not during boiling.
- Store leftover cooked corn in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days.
