Boozy Orange Blossom Cranberry Sauce

This Boozy Orange Blossom Cranberry Sauce balances tart cranberries with sweet orange juice, brown and white sugars, and warm spices like allspice, cinnamon, and ginger. Enhanced with Cointreau and aromatic orange blossom water, it offers a fragrant and zesty accompaniment that gels as it cools, suitable for holiday meals or special occasions.

Description

The Boozy Orange Blossom Cranberry Sauce begins by dissolving sugars into freshly squeezed orange juice before adding cranberries, orange zest, and warming spices such as allspice, cinnamon, and ginger. The mixture simmers until most cranberries burst and soften, creating a thickened base. Off heat, Cointreau and orange blossom water are stirred in, adding layers of citrus complexity and floral aroma.

This sauce has a vibrant balance of tartness and sweetness, with a smooth but slightly textured consistency from the cranberries. It makes a lively addition to roasted meats or can serve as a festive condiment on a holiday table.

The sauce is served chilled after the flavors meld and it gels upon cooling, which allows the taste to develop deeper notes from the alcohol and orange blossom essence.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1/2 cup orange juice freshly squeezed
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 12 ounces cranberries 1 bag
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1/4 teaspoon allspice
  • Pinch cinnamon
  • Pinch ginger
  • 2 tablespoons Cointreau or more to taste- I usually use 3 tbsp
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons orange blossom water

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, dissolve white and brown sugar into the orange juice.
  2. Add cranberries, orange zest and spices. Bring ingredients to a simmer.
  3. Cook over medium-low to medium heat for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the cranberries are popped and dissolving and the mixture begins to thicken.
  4. Turn off heat and pour in the Cointreau and orange blossom water, stir. Let the mixture slowly come back to room temperature. It will “gel” as it cools. Chill before serving.

Notes

  • Use a medium saucepan for better heat distribution while simmering the sauce.
  • Let the sauce cool completely to room temperature, then chill to achieve proper gelling before serving.
  • If desired, adjust the amount of Cointreau for preference on booziness and citrus intensity.
