Bourbon Cough Syrup
Description
The Bourbon Cough Syrup recipe blends raw honey, bourbon or whiskey, and apple cider vinegar with "the mother" into a jar, shaken until well combined. The mixture creates a syrup intended for soothing coughs or sore throats with a balance of sweetness, warmth from the alcohol, and tangy acidity from the vinegar.
Flavor variations include adding ground cinnamon, ginger, or infusing cinnamon sticks into the bourbon before mixing. The syrup is recommended to be consumed in small doses — about half an ounce per serving — and may be diluted in warm water for ease of sipping.
For a nonalcoholic option, water replaces bourbon but shortens shelf life to about two weeks. When stored refrigerated, the alcoholic syrup can keep up to six months, making it convenient for repeated use during cold seasons.
Ingredients
- 2 ounces honey raw, 4 tablespoons
- 2 ounces bourbon or whiskey
- 2 ounces apple cider vinegar with the mother
Instructions
- Add all ingredients to a jar. Close the jar, and shake until the honey is incorporated.
- Use as desired. Recommended serving size ½ oz (1 TB) per person.Optionally, dilute a spoonful of the syrup by pouring into a small mug of warm water. Sip on the warm tonic.Store the lidded jar in the fridge, and use within 6 months.
Notes
- Nonalcoholic version replaces bourbon with water but lasts only about two weeks when refrigerated.
- Flavor can be enhanced by adding ground cinnamon or ginger to the syrup before shaking or infusing cinnamon sticks in bourbon in advance.
- Store the syrup in a sealed jar in the refrigerator and use within six months for best quality.
