Bourbon Syrup

Bourbon Syrup is a simple sweetener made by dissolving packed light or dark brown sugar with water and finishing with bourbon. It is slightly thin in consistency yet flavorful, suitable for drizzling or mixing in drinks or desserts. The syrup can be stored refrigerated and gently reheated before use.

Description

The syrup begins by heating packed brown sugar and water until boiling, then simmering briefly to dissolve and blend flavors. Bourbon is slowly mixed in off the heat to avoid bubbling over. The heat resumes at a low simmer to infuse the bourbon flavor into the syrup.

Despite cooking, the syrup remains relatively thin once cooled but delivers distinct caramelized sugar sweetness and a warm bourbon note. It can be poured immediately or stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to a month.

Gentle reheating in the microwave softens the syrup for easier use but should be monitored carefully to prevent overheating or overflow.

Occasional sugar crystals may form at the bottom of the jar due to sugar saturation and temperature but do not indicate spoilage. These crystals can be ignored or removed if preferred.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups light brown sugar or dark brown sugar, packed
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon bourbon or 1 teaspoon vanilla, maple, or rum extract, if preferred, see NOTE above

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, stir together the sugar and water, and cook until the liquid just begins to boil. Immediately reduce the heat to medium-low and cook at a very low simmer, stirring constantly, for 2 minutes.
  2. Remove the saucepan from the heat and slowly pour in the bourbon, stirring carefully so that the mixture doesn’t bubble over.
  3. Return the saucepan to medium-low heat and cook, stirring occasionally, for 3 minutes more. Remove from the heat and let the syrup cool slightly.☞ TESTER TIP: Don’t expect the syrup to thicken much as it cools. It will stay relatively thin—but delectable!
  4. Use the syrup immediately or pour into a sealable jar and refrigerate for up to a month. (To reheat, warm in the microwave for 30 to 40 seconds, but watch very closely to prevent an overspill!)

Notes

  • Store the syrup refrigerated in a sealed jar for up to one month.
  • Reheat gently in short bursts to warm before using, watching carefully to avoid spills.
  • Do not be concerned by sugar crystals that may form on the bottom; they are harmless and can be removed or left as a sweet treat.
