Braised Lamb Shanks Recipe

Braised Lamb Shanks Recipe uses seared lamb shanks simmered in a flavorful mixture of beef broth, red wine, tomato sauce, garlic, onions, and bay leaves. This slow-cooking method tenderizes the meat and infuses it with rich flavors, resulting in tender, aromatic lamb perfect for hearty meals.

Description

This braised lamb shank recipe starts by seasoning lamb shanks with salt and pepper, then browning them in a hot oven-safe pot with neutral oil. Removing the lamb temporarily, onions are cooked in the same pot until lightly browned to add sweetness and depth. Whole garlic cloves, bay leaves, beef broth, dry red wine, and tomato sauce are added, creating a robust braising liquid.

The lamb shanks are returned to the pot and baked at 350°F (175°C) for about two hours or until tender. This slow oven braise softens the meat and allows it to absorb the savory broth, wine, and tomato flavors. The resulting dish is rich, tender, and flavorful with a well-balanced sauce.

Serve the lamb shanks with the braising sauce alongside mashed potatoes, polenta, or crusty bread to soak up the sauce. This recipe delivers a satisfying main course with minimal active cooking time.
