Braised Oxtail Recipe

This Braised Oxtail recipe slowly cooks oxtails with baby potatoes, carrots, onion, bay leaves, salt, pepper, and water in a covered Dutch oven. The long baking time tenderizes the oxtail until it falls off the bone, while the vegetables absorb flavors and soften. The method creates a rich, savory dish with hearty, melt-in-the-mouth meat and tender root vegetables.

Description

The Braised Oxtail Recipe starts by browning 3 pounds of oxtail pieces in neutral cooking oil to develop deep flavor through caramelization. Chopped carrots, onions, and baby potatoes are added to the pot along with bay leaves, salt, black pepper, and water. The ingredients are combined and covered to braise in the oven at 350°F for 2 to 3 hours. Slow cooking breaks down the connective tissue in the oxtail, resulting in tender meat easily falling off bones.

The cooked vegetables soak up the meat’s flavors, becoming soft and hearty components of the dish. The broth thickens slightly and carries the aromas of the bay leaves and seasoning. This traditional braise produces a comforting meal with a rich, savory character suited to colder days or substantial dinners.

Serve the braised oxtail with its vegetables and broth as a complete one-pot meal. It pairs well with crusty bread or creamy mashed potatoes to complement the rich sauce. The dish can also be portioned and refrigerated for easy reheating.
