Bread Bowl Dip
Description
This recipe uses a round sourdough bread loaf with the center removed to form a bowl. A creamy blend of cream cheese, sour cream, sharp or medium cheddar cheese, and Worcestershire sauce is mixed and poured into the bread bowl. The whole assembly is wrapped in foil and baked at a low temperature (325°F) for 45 to 60 minutes until heated through and soft.
After baking, cooked and crumbled bacon is gently folded into the dip to preserve its crispness. Additional garnishes such as shredded cheddar cheese, extra bacon bits, and sliced green onions are added on top to enhance texture and flavor contrast.
The dip is served warm, accompanied by the reserved hollowed-out bread pieces and optionally crackers, pita chips, or vegetables for dunking. This allows guests to enjoy scooping both creamy dip and toasted bread chunks.
Bacon is added after baking to prevent sogginess, while seasoning is sufficient from the combination of bacon and cheese. Extra bread beyond the hollowed loaf is recommended to ensure ample dipping options.
Ingredients
- 1 sourdough bread round loaf
- 8 ounces cream cheese
- 1 ½ cups sour cream
- 2 cups cheddar cheese shredded, medium or sharp
- 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
- 3/4 pound Bacon cooked and crumbled
- 2 green onions (optional)
Instructions
- Cut out a circle in the top of the bread and gut out the middle to make a bread bowl (save inside pieces of bread for dipping).
- In a mixing bowl beat cream cheese, sour cream, cheddar cheese, and Worcestershire sauce.
- Pour into the bread bowl.
- Wrap up the whole thing in aluminum foil. Bake at 325 degrees for 45 minutes to an hour.
- Remove from oven and stir in the bacon.
- Garnish with shredded cheese, extra bacon and sliced green onions.
- Serve with extra bread pieces from bowl and crackers.
Notes
- Add bacon after baking the dip to keep it crispy and avoid sogginess.
- Consider extra bread, crackers, or vegetables to accompany the dip, as the hollowed loaf may not provide enough for dipping.
- Seasoning is usually sufficient with the bacon and cheddar cheese, but salt and pepper can be adjusted to taste.
- Garnish with additional cheddar cheese, fresh parsley, or sliced green onions for enhanced flavor and presentation.
