Broccoli in Cheese Sauce

Broccoli in Cheese Sauce pairs tender-crisp steamed broccoli with a smooth, creamy cheddar cheese sauce. The sauce is thickened with cornstarch and flavored with Worcestershire, garlic powder, onion powder, white pepper, and nutmeg, lending a subtle complexity. This dish highlights the contrast between the slightly firm texture of the broccoli and the rich, velvety cheese coating, making it a comforting vegetable side.

Description

This recipe steamed broccoli florets until just tender, retaining a bit of bite and bright green color. The cheese sauce is made on the stovetop by gently heating milk with Worcestershire sauce and spices before thickening with cornstarch. Once thickened, sharp shredded cheddar is whisked in until fully melted and smooth.

The seasoned cheese sauce adds both creaminess and subtle savory notes, including the warmth of nutmeg and a hint of garlic and onion flavors. Together with the broccoli, the dish offers a classic combination where the vegetable's freshness is enhanced by a luscious sauce.

Serve this broccoli dish warm as a side to a variety of main courses. It pairs well with roasted or grilled meats and adds richness to vegetable-forward meals.
