Broiled Halibut Recipe

Broiled Halibut is prepared with fillets marinated in a mixture of avocado oil, Meyer lemon juice, garlic, and sea salt, then cooked under high heat until flaky. The dish is accompanied by a fresh mango and avocado relish and cumin-seasoned cauliflower rice, complementing the mild fish with bright, fresh, and earthy flavors.

Description

This recipe begins by marinating halibut fillets in a blend of avocado oil, Meyer lemon juice, minced garlic, and sea salt, which infuses the fish with gentle citrus and savory notes. The fillets are then broiled on a rack set in the oven's upper third, ensuring quick, direct heat that cooks the fish until the center is flaky but moist.

Alongside, a mango and avocado relish combines diced ripe mango and avocado with green onion, Meyer lemon juice, and a pinch of salt, adding a fresh, sweet, and slightly creamy contrast to the broiled fish. The cauliflower rice brings a light, textured base with cumin and sautéed garlic lending earthiness and warmth.

This combination offers a wholesome, balanced plate with bright citrus, subtle spice, and tender fish. It works well for a nutritious lunch or dinner where fresh flavors and simple cooking methods are preferred.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Halibut

  • 3 pounds halibut 5 pound each, fillets
  • 2 Tbsp avocado oil or other heat-resistant oil
  • 1 Meyer lemon juiced (about ¼ cup of juice)
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • salt sea salt

For the Mango and Avocado Relish

  • 1 ripe Mango peeled, pitted and diced
  • ½ ripe avocado diced
  • 3 talks green onion sliced
  • 1 Meyer lemon juiced
  • Pinch salt

For the Cauliflower Rice

  • 1.5 Tbsp avocado oil
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 head cauliflower grated
  • ½ tsp cumin ground
  • Pinch salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare the mango and avocado salsa by adding all ingredients to a bowl. Mix to combine and set aside or refrigerate until ready to use.
  2. Prepare the halibut by sprinkling each fillet with coarse sea salt. Whisk together the avocado oil, lemon juice and garlic. Pour the mixture over the three fillets, allowing them to marinate at least 10 minutes.
  3. Put your oven on the high broil setting.
  4. Place the fish in an oiled or foil-lined baking dish or pan. Put the fish in the oven on the rack second to the top (be careful not to get the fish too close to the top of the oven, as there’s fire danger in doing so!).
  5. Broil for 10 to 12 minutes (if you like your fish slightly raw in the center, broil for 8 minutes).
  6. While the fish is baking, grate the head of cauliflower (not including the green stems) using a box grater. In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium and sauté the garlic about 2 minutes. Add the grated cauliflower, ground cumin and salt. Stir consistently with a wooden spoon until cauliflower bits are softened, about 8 to 10 minutes.
  7. Serve the halibut with a generous portion of the mango salsa with cauliflower rice on the side!
