Brown Sugar Kettle Corn

Brown Sugar Kettle Corn offers a sweet and salty crunch made by popping kernels in oil and coating them with brown sugar and salt. The popcorn achieves a crisp texture with lightly caramelized sugar, creating a snack that balances sweetness and a hint of saltiness. The method involves careful timing and shaking to prevent burning while coating evenly. It's an enjoyable treat for movie nights or casual snacking when you want a home-popped sweet crunch.

Description

Brown Sugar Kettle Corn is a snack made by cooking popcorn kernels in oil until they pop, then coating them with brown sugar and salt while still hot. The recipe uses brown sugar, which melts onto the popcorn, creating a thin, caramelized shell over the fluffy kernels. Salt adds contrast to the sweetness. The process requires heating a few kernels first as a test, then adding the rest and sugar, covered but slightly vented to release steam, with frequent shaking to ensure even cooking and coating.

The result is popcorn with a crisp, slightly sticky exterior from the melted brown sugar and a satisfying crunch typical of kettle corn. The snack is sweet with a subtle salted note, making it ideal for casual munching. Allowing the popcorn to cool slightly helps the sugar coating set without clumping.

This homemade kettle corn is convenient to make anytime you want a sweet snack made from pantry staples. It avoids processed additives and can be tailored in sweetness and saltiness. The recipe is simple but needs attention during cooking to prevent burning the sugar.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or cooking oil of your choice
  • 1/4 cup popcorn kernels
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar not packed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  1. Place a large bowl on the counter to pour your finished kettle corn into.
  2. To a large, heavy-bottomed pot, add oil and 3 kernels of popcorn. Cover and heat over medium-high heat (medium if your stove runs hot). When you hear all three kernels pop, add remaining popcorn and salt. Shake pan for a few seconds to coat the kernels in oil and then pour sugar and salt over the top. Return lid to the pot, leaving a small crack to allow steam to escape.
  3. Shake every few seconds until popcorn starts popping, and then shake continuously. Pull the pan from heat when there are between 1 and 2 seconds between pops. Immediately transfer popcorn to your prepared bowl, shaking the pan as you go.
  4. Pick out any unpopped or burnt kernels and enjoy!
