Buffalo Chicken Sloppy Joes Recipe
Description
This recipe begins by sautéing onions, carrots, and celery in olive oil, which builds an aromatic and slightly sweet flavor foundation. Garlic is added for a mild pungency before incorporating ground chicken, which is cooked until browned. Tomato sauce mixed with hot sauce simmers with the meat and vegetables, creating the signature spicy buffalo flavor. The sauce is reduced until thick to achieve the familiar sloppy joe texture, with adjustments made by adding water or broth if needed for consistency.
The final dish is served on hamburger buns and can be topped with blue cheese crumbles, ranch dressing, and chopped chives, which add creaminess and a cool contrast to the spicy meat. This combination gives a unique take on a messy, spicy sandwich suitable for casual meals or game-day fare.
Leftover buffalo chicken meat can be refrigerated for up to 3 days or frozen for 3 months. Shredded chicken may be substituted for ground chicken if preferred, providing a different texture. The sauce should be thick but moist; simmer longer to thicken or add liquid to loosen if necessary.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- ½ onion chopped
- 2 carrot finely chopped
- 2 celery finely chopped, stalks
- 2 cloves garlic minced
- 1 pound ground chicken
- 8 ounces tomato sauce 1 can
- ⅓ cup hot sauce like Frank’s Red Hot
- 4 Hamburger Bun
Optional Toppings:
- blue cheese crumbled
- ranch dressing
- chives chopped
Instructions
- Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Once heated, add the onion, carrots, and celery to the pan and sprinkle with salt. Sauté for a few minutes until softened. Add in the garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add in the ground chicken and break it up into pieces. Cook until the meat is browned.
- Stir in the tomato sauce and hot sauce. Turn the heat to low. Cover the pan, and let it simmer for 5 minutes.
- Uncover the pan and give everything a good stir. Continue to cook, uncovered, for another 2-4 minutes, until the sauce reduces and thickens to your liking. If the mixture seems dry, stir in ¼ cup water or chicken broth. If the mixture has too much liquid, keep simmering until the sauce thickens.
- Add the sloppy joe mixture to the buns, and serve with blue cheese, ranch dressing, and chives if desired.
Notes
- Store leftover meat in an airtight container refrigerated for 3 days or frozen for 3 months.
- Shredded chicken can be used instead of ground chicken for a different texture.
- Adjust thickness by simmering longer to thicken or adding ¼ cup water or broth to loosen the mixture.
