Burrata, Pesto, and Tomato Jam Appetizer (Spread)

This appetizer features layers of roasted tomato jam, basil pesto, and creamy burrata cheese served alongside grilled or baked baguette slices. The combination yields a spread with contrasting textures: sweet and tangy jam, herby pesto, and soft cheese. Bread is lightly toasted and optionally rubbed with garlic to complement the rich flavors. It works well as a flavorful starter or casual snack.

Description

The Burrata, Pesto, and Tomato Jam Appetizer involves preparing crostini or grilled baguette slices brushed with olive oil, toasted until golden, and optionally rubbed with garlic for an aromatic touch. The spread is assembled by layering tomato jam, basil pesto, and burrata on a serving plate. Burrata can be opened or served whole to reveal a creamy center at serving time.

The tomato jam is roasted to develop sweetness and depth, while the pesto introduces fresh herbal notes from basil. Burrata adds a rich, creamy texture that contrasts with the bread’s crunch. Sea salt and fresh black pepper finish the dish with subtle seasoning.

This appetizer is designed for spreading or dipping. Using good-quality pesto and jam enhances the flavors. It is suitable for entertaining or as a light accompaniment to a meal.

Store-bought pesto or tomato jam can be used to simplify preparation. The tomato jam requires about two hours roasting, so it can be made in advance.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 baguette sliced approximately 1/2 inch
  • olive oil drizzle
  • 1 garlic optional, clove
  • 6 ounces basil pesto
  • 1/2 /2 cup tomato jam roasted
  • 8 ounces burrata cheese
  • sea salt to taste, flakey sea salt, freshly ground black pepper
  • black pepper to taste, flakey sea salt, freshly ground black pepper

Instructions

Crostini or Grilled Bread

  1. Grilled Bread: Heat grill or grill pan over medium heat. Brush baguette slices lightly with olive oil. Grill for 2-3 minutes on each side, until marks appear or toasted. Remove from heat, let cool slightly so that you can handle the slices, and rub a peeled garlic clove on one side of the bread if desired.
  2. Crostini: Preheat the oven to 375°F. Brush each side of the baguette slices with olive oil and place them on a large baking sheet. Bake for 5-7 minutes on each side until golden brown. Let cool slightly so that you can handle the slices, and rub a peeled garlic clove on one side of the bread if desired.

Burrata Pesto Dip

  1. On a serving plate, layer tomato jam, pesto, and burrata. You can cut open the burrata or leave it intact until serving time. Sprinkle the burrata with salt and freshly ground black pepper.
  2. Serve with the grilled bread or crostini (or another dipping/spreading vehicle of choice) and a knife for spreading. You can also dip, depending on the thickness of the burrata's exterior. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Store-bought tomato jam and pesto are convenient options for quick assembly.
  • Tomato jam needs around 2 hours to roast and can be prepared ahead.
  • Use a peeled garlic clove to gently rub toasted bread slices for subtle aroma, optional.
