Buttered Noodles

Buttered Noodles are cooked egg noodles tossed with melted butter, then seasoned simply with salt and freshly ground black pepper. The dish highlights the rich flavor of butter coating tender noodles, offering a comforting and straightforward pasta side. The texture is tender with a light buttery coating, suitable as a base or accompaniment for various meals.

Description

This recipe involves boiling egg noodles in well-salted water until tender, then draining them thoroughly. While off the heat, butter is added to the pot, and the hot noodles are returned and tossed until the butter melts and coats them evenly. Freshly ground salt and black pepper enhance the dish's flavor without masking the butter's richness. Optional garnishes like Parmesan cheese or parsley can be added for variation.

The method preserves the noodles’ tenderness and prevents them from becoming greasy or clumped. This simple preparation allows the buttery flavor to shine and can complement many main dishes or stand alone as a light meal.

Egg noodles are traditional here, but other pasta types can be substituted with adjusted cooking times. Leftover noodles keep refrigerated for up to three days and can be reheated covered in the microwave for convenience.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 16 ounces egg noodles (see note 1)
  • 1/4 cup butter (1/2 stick, or to taste, see note 2)
  • salt see note 3, freshly ground
  • black pepper see note 3, freshly ground

Instructions

  1. In a large pot over high heat, bring 4 quarts water and 1 tablespoon salt to boil. Add noodles and cook until tender, about 8 to 10 minutes. Drain well.
  2. Off heat, add butter to pot. Add drained noodles and toss until butter is melted and noodles are evenly coated. Season to taste with salt and pepper (I like 1/4 teaspoon salt and 1/8 teaspoon pepper). Garnish with Parmesan cheese and parsley if desired.

Notes

  • Egg noodles are traditional, but other pasta types can substitute; adjust cooking times accordingly.
  • Use about 1/4 cup butter, or adjust quantity to personal taste.
  • Salt is crucial in both cooking water and seasoning to enhance butter flavor.
  • Black pepper can be added at serving for individual preference.
  • Cooked noodles can be refrigerated covered for up to three days and reheated in the microwave.
  • Adding Parmesan cheese or parsley at serving adds flavor variations.
