Butterscotch Oatmeal

Butterscotch Oatmeal combines quick oats cooked in a milk and egg mixture sweetened with brown sugar and seasoned with a pinch of salt. The oatmeal develops a creamy texture with optional butter stirred in at the end for richness. This comforting breakfast porridge is best served warm and can be complemented with milk and fresh fruit.

Description

Butterscotch Oatmeal starts by whisking together milk, egg, brown sugar, and salt in a saucepan, then cooking the mixture over medium heat. Quick oats are added and stirred occasionally until the oatmeal thickens and bubbles, developing a creamy consistency without graininess by maintaining a moderate cooking temperature.

Finishing the dish by stirring in butter enhances the flavor and adds smoothness. Letting the oatmeal rest off the heat with a lid allows further thickening, resulting in a hearty textured dish ideal for a satisfying breakfast.

This oatmeal pairs well with additional milk or fresh fruit toppings, adding a fresh contrast to its rich sweetness. The recipe source is noted as coming from a family member, lending it a traditional, home-cooked feel.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup quick oats
  • 2 teaspoons butter optional

Instructions

  1. In a small saucepan, whisk together the milk, egg, brown sugar, and salt.
  2. Turn the heat on to medium, and don't go higher than that the whole time you are cooking otherwise it will turn out grainy.
  3. Mix in the oats. Stir occasionally. When the oatmeal begins to bubble, cook and stir until thick.
  4. When it has reached the consistency you like, remove from heat, and stir in butter until melted.
  5. I usually let it sit off the heat with a lid on for a couple minutes so that it gets nice and thick. Serve with milk and fruit!

Notes

  • Maintain medium heat during cooking to avoid grainy texture.
  • Allow oatmeal to rest covered off heat to thicken before serving.
  • Serve with milk and fresh fruit as desired for a balanced meal.
