Buttery, Garlicky Homemade Croutons
Description
The recipe calls for cubing French and baguette bread into one-inch pieces, then tossing them in a blend of melted salted butter, olive oil, and garlic powder. Baking at 350°F ensures the bread crisps evenly without burning the garlic flavor, since garlic powder is used instead of fresh garlic to avoid bitterness.
Once baked and cooled, the croutons have a crunchy texture and rich buttery flavor with a mild garlicky note. They can be stored in a covered container to maintain freshness and are ideal for enhancing the mouthfeel and flavor of leafy salads or hearty soups.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cup butter melted, salted
- 1/4 cup olive oil
- 1 French bread around 8 cups, small, cut into 1 inch cubes
- 1 baguette around 8 cups, small, cut into 1 inch cubes
- 1-2 teaspoons garlic powder
Instructions
- Pre-heat your oven to 350 °F.
- Whisk together the butter, olive oil and garlic powder. ( Using minced garlic doesn't work, as it cooks too long in the oven and burns!)
- Place the bread cubes in a large bowl, then pour the butter mixture over top. Toss until they are coated.
- Scatter out evenly on a large baking sheet in one layer then bake in the oven until golden brown and crispy, anywhere from 15-20 minutes, this depends on how dry your bread was, how large the pieces are.etc. Remove and cool.
- Store the croutons in a covered container or plastic bag.
- Serve in soups or salads.
