Cabbage and Sausage Skillet
Description
The recipe starts by browning slices of smoked sausage such as kielbasa to develop a golden crust and deepen the sausage's smoky flavor. Once removed, aromatic vegetables including chopped onions and garlic are cooked in butter to soften and release their flavors. Coarsely chopped cabbage is added and cooked with Cajun seasoning, salt, and pepper until wilted but still retaining some texture.
The sausage is returned to the skillet to finish cooking with the cabbage, allowing the sausage juices to mingle with the vegetable base. The result is a rich, savory dish with subtle spiced notes from the Cajun seasoning that complement the smoky sausage. The texture contrast between tender cabbage and firm sausage slices adds interest.
This skillet meal can be served as a main dish for a simple dinner, pairing well with bread or rice for a balanced plate. It requires minimal prep and cooks quickly using common pantry ingredients. Washing and drying the cabbage before use improves texture and cleanliness.
Using turkey or beef kielbasa are acceptable substitutions if preferred. Cutting cabbage pieces to a size similar to sausage slices helps even cooking and eating consistency.
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 pound smoked sausage such as kielbasa, sliced
- 1 tablespoon butter
- 1/2 cup onion chopped
- 1 tablespoon garlic minced
- 4 cups cabbage coarsely chopped
- 1 1/2 teaspoons Cajun seasoning
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon parsley chopped
Instructions
- Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium high heat. Add the sausage and cook for 3-4 minutes per side or until golden brown.
- Remove the sausage from the pan and cover to keep warm.
- Melt the butter in the pan. Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes or until softened.
- Add the garlic and cook for 30 seconds.
- Place the cabbage, Cajun seasoning, salt and pepper in the pan.
- Cook for 8-10 minutes or until cabbage is wilted. Stir in the sausage and cook for 1 more minute.
- Sprinkle with parsley, then serve.
Notes
- Kielbasa sausage is preferred for its flavor and availability, but turkey or beef kielbasa can be used.
- Wash and dry cabbage thoroughly before chopping to ensure cleanliness and proper texture.
- Chop cabbage pieces roughly the same size as sausage slices for even cooking and consistent bite size.
