Cajun Halloumi Burger with Garlic Yogurt Sauce

The Cajun Halloumi Burger features slices of halloumi cheese seasoned with Cajun spices and pan-seared to develop a crispy exterior and soft interior, served on brioche buns with tomato, lettuce, and a garlicky yogurt sauce. This savory vegetarian burger balances spicy, salty, and creamy elements for a satisfying texture and flavor combination.

Description

This recipe starts by preparing a garlic yogurt sauce mixing plain Greek yogurt with crushed garlic and black pepper. Halloumi cheese is sliced just under one centimeter thick and brushed with olive oil mixed with Cajun seasoning. The halloumi is then seared in a hot non-stick pan for about two minutes per side until developing a browned, crispy crust.

The burger assembly includes lightly toasted brioche buns spread with garlic yogurt sauce, layered with tomato slices, seared halloumi, and lettuce. The crispy edges of the halloumi provide a contrast to the creamy sauce and fresh vegetables.

Optional side sweet potato wedges complement this dish well by adding a starchy, mildly sweet element. The burger works as a hearty vegetarian option with a flavorful profile.

Check halloumi packaging for vegetarian suitability regarding rennet content. Leftover fried halloumi should be refrigerated for up to three days and reheated gently to avoid burning the exterior while warming the center.

Notes

  • Confirm halloumi suitability for vegetarians, as some may contain animal rennet.
  • Slice halloumi according to its shape; smaller cheese balls may require multiple slices per serving.
  • Ensure the frying pan is very hot to achieve a crispy sear quickly without overcooking.
  • Alternative cooking methods include grilling, broiling, or using a griddle pan for the halloumi.
  • Consume fried halloumi immediately or refrigerate leftovers up to three days.
  • Reheat leftover halloumi slowly over medium-low heat to warm through without burning the outside.
