California Burger Recipe

Report
This California Burger recipe combines seasoned ground beef patties with fresh toppings like sliced avocado, pepper jack cheese, shredded lettuce, pickles, and tomato for a balanced combination of savory, creamy, and tangy flavors. The patties are seasoned with onion, Worcestershire sauce, brown mustard, and spices, delivering rich taste and a juicy texture. Adding optional smoked bacon and condiments completes the build for a hearty sandwich ideal for lunch or casual dinners.

Description

The recipe calls for mixing ground beef with finely diced onion, Worcestershire sauce, spicy brown mustard, onion dip seasoning, salt, and pepper. These ingredients create a flavorful burger patty with well-distributed seasoning. The patties are cooked on a skillet to an internal temperature of at least 165ºF and topped with pepper jack cheese near the end to melt.

The assembled burger layers the cooked patty on a toasted bun, adding shredded lettuce, avocado slices or mashed avocado with citrus juice, tomato slices, pickles, mayonnaise, and mustard. This combination offers a creamy texture from avocado and cheese, a bright acidity from pickles and tomato, and a savory profile from the seasoned beef and sauces.

These burgers work well with classic side dishes like fries or salads for a satisfying meal. The instructions also provide grilling alternatives and advise against overmixing the meat to prevent toughness. Leftover patties can be refrigerated separately and assembled fresh, preserving the quality of toppings and bun.

Avoid overmixing the meat to keep the patties tender after cooking.Use additional salt and pepper on formed patties to boost flavor before cooking.Grill patties at 400ºF for 3-4 minutes per side, adding cheese near the end to melt.Store cooked patties without toppings in an airtight container for up to 5 days, assembling just before eating.Consider making a fry sauce as a condiment to complement the burgers.

Ingredients

Servings

For the burger

  • 1 lbs ground beef 92% lean, lean
  • cup onion finely diced or grated, white
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp brown mustard spicy
  • 1 packet onion dip seasoning
  • pinch salt
  • pinch black pepper

Toppings

  • 4 Hamburger Bun
  • 4 lices pepper jack cheese
  • lettuce shredded or leaves
  • 2 avocado
  • 12 pickle slices coins (round slices
  • 1 tomato sliced
  • mayonnaise to taste, light
  • mustard to taste, spicy
  • Bacon optional, applewood smoked, slices

Instructions

  1. First finely dice the white onions. You want them small and uniform. Then, combine beef with all the burger ingredients to a large bowl.
  2. Stir the burger mixture until everything is combined.
  3. Use your hands to form the mixture into 4 equal sized patties. Season each patty lightly with a pinch of salt and black pepper.
  4. Use cooking spray or a little olive oil to grease a large skillet and heat to medium heat. Place burgers into the pan.
  5. Cook for 3-4 minutes on each side in the hot skillet or until the burger reaches desired doneness (at least 165ºF).
  6. Add a slice of cheese to each burger 1 minute before removing from the pan. If needed, add a lid to the pan to trap the heat in so the cheese melts.
  7. Build the burger to your liking, just don’t skimp on the avocado! That’s the main topping in a California Burger Recipe! My preference: lots of pickles, light mayo, sliced avocado (or mashed avocado with a squeeze of lemon juice and lime juice), slice of tomato, shredded lettuce leaves, AND with a toasted bun.
  8. For a perfectly toasted bun, spread a little butter on both the top bun and bottom bun and place on a baking sheet under the broiler, cut side up for 30-60 seconds until golden brown.

Notes

  • Do not overmix the ground beef mixture to prevent tough burger patties.
  • Season patties lightly with salt and pepper just before cooking for enhanced flavor.
  • Grill the burgers at 400ºF for 3-4 minutes per side or cook on skillet until reaching 165ºF internal temperature.
  • Add cheese one minute before removing the patties to melt it properly.
  • Store cooked patties in airtight containers without toppings for up to 5 days; assemble burgers just before serving to keep buns and toppings fresh.
  • Try making a special fry sauce to accompany the burgers for added taste.
