Calzone

This calzone recipe uses pizza dough filled with classic Italian ingredients such as pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, Canadian bacon, pepperoni, and cooked sausage. The folded dough pocket is brushed with a garlic butter and parsley mixture and baked until golden brown, resulting in a hearty dish with a crispy crust and melty, savory filling. It offers flexibility for different fillings and is perfect for a portable meal or casual dinner.

Description

The Calzone recipe starts with dividing pizza dough into portions, rolling each into an oval, and layering one half with pizza sauce, shredded mozzarella, and a combination of Canadian bacon, pepperoni, and cooked sausage. The dough is folded over and sealed by pinching and crimping its edges, then brushed with a butter mixture flavored with garlic powder and parsley. Slits cut into the top allow steam to escape during baking at 425°F until golden. This process ensures a golden crust with a soft, melted cheese interior and rich cured meats providing flavor and texture contrast.

The calzone can be served as a main dish or hand-held meal, offering a filling combination of meat and cheese enclosed in bread. It is suitable for lunch or dinner, and leftovers can be reheated without losing much of the fresh-baked quality.

This recipe can be customized with various fillings, including vegetable or Hawaiian styles, adjusting ingredients like pineapple, peppers, or mushrooms. The butter and garlic brush on top adds a subtle aromatic finish to the crust. Allowing the calzones to cool slightly before slicing helps the filling set and prevents dripping.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 pizza dough store-bought or homemade, about 2 lbs
  • 1 cup pizza sauce
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese shredded
  • ½ cup Canadian bacon diced, or ham
  • ½ cup pepperoni
  • ½ cup sausage cooked and crumbled
  • 2 Tablespoons butter melted
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 Tablespoon parsley chopped

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees Fahrenheit. Coat a sheet pan with cookie spray and set aside.
  2. Divide the pizza dough into 4 pieces. Turn dough onto a lightly floured surface, shape into balls and then roll into ¼ inch thick ovals.
  3. Spoon pizza sauce onto one side of the oval. Top with cheese, canadian bacon, pepperoni and sausage. Fold dough in half; dampen seams with water and pinch together then crimp edges all around. Transfer to prepared baking sheets.
  4. In a small bowl combine butter, garlic powder and parsley. Brush the tops of the calzones with mixture. Using a serrated knife, slit the tops of the calzones in 2 to 3 spots to create steam vents.
  5. Place baking sheet in preheated oven and baking 15-17 minutes or until the tops are golden brown.
  6. Remove from oven. Let cool 5 minutes before cutting open.

Notes

  • Try different fillings such as Supreme with veggies and olives, Hawaiian with pineapple (drained), or BBQ chicken variations.
  • Let calzones cool for 5 minutes before cutting to avoid hot filling spills.
