Campbells Green Bean Casserole combines green beans with a creamy mushroom soup base, enhanced by soy sauce and black pepper. The mixture is topped with crispy fried onions, baked until bubbly and golden. The recipe allows fresh, frozen, or canned green beans, offering flexibility based on what is available. This casserole provides a tender vegetable texture under a crunchy onion topping, making it a familiar side dish suited for family meals or holiday dinners.

Description

Campbells Green Bean Casserole Recipe features green beans blended with cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper, stirred together with a portion of crispy fried onions. This mixture is placed into a casserole dish and baked. The cooking methods accommodate both oven and air fryer options, with the onions added midway to keep their crispness. The casserole is creamy and has a combination of tender green beans and crunchy onion topping, providing a contrast in textures.

The soy sauce adds a subtle depth of flavor complementing the creamy mushroom soup, and the black pepper offers mild heat. The fried onions sprinkled on top caramelize during baking, contributing a crisp golden finish. The casserole suits occasions where a comforting vegetable side is desired, fitting well next to meats or other main dishes.

When using fresh green beans, blanching before baking ensures they are tender. Adjusting salt may be necessary based on the sodium content of the ingredients. If cooking multiple dishes simultaneously, cooking times may vary; checking that the casserole is hot in the center before serving is advised.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 can condensed cream of mushroom soup 10.5 ounces
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 4 cups green beans 2 cans green beans, one 16 ounce package frozen green beans or 1 1/2 pounds fresh green beans, cut
  • 1 1/3 cup fried onions divided, crispy, French style
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Spray a 9x9 casserole dish with cooking spray.
  2. If using fresh green beans clean them, cut them and blanch them in a pot of boiling water for 2 minutes. If using canned green beans drain them in a colander.
  3. Mix the soup and milk together in a bowl. Stir it so it is smooth and all the lumps are gone. Then stir in the soy sauce.
  4. Stir in the green beans and 2/3 of a cup of the onions (about half). Add pepper to taste and mix everything well.
  5. Put the green bean mixture in the prepared casserole dish and spread it out evenly.
  6. Cook In the Air Fryer: Bake at 350 degrees F for 10 minutes. Stir the casserole, then sprinkle the remaining onions on top and cook for 2 more minutes to brown them.
  7. Cook In the Oven: Bake at 350 degrees F for 25 minutes. Stir, then sprinkle the remaining onions on top and bake for 5 more minutes until they are golden brown.

Notes

  • Blanch fresh green beans briefly before baking for optimal tenderness.
  • Adjust salt cautiously since soup and soy sauce contribute sodium.
  • Ensure casserole is heated through when cooking alongside other oven dishes.
  • Use unsalted cream of mushroom soup and reduced sodium soy sauce to control saltiness.
