Campfire Mac & Cheese

This Campfire Mac & Cheese combines cooked elbow macaroni with Alfredo sauce and three types of shredded cheese, creating a creamy, cheesy pasta that melts smoothly over a campfire. The dish is prepared ahead, stored in a foil pan, and finished by heating over coals until bubbly. Its rich and creamy texture complements outdoor cooking and camping settings.

Description

Campfire Mac & Cheese uses cooked elbow macaroni mixed with Alfredo sauce, cheddar, Parmesan, and mozzarella cheeses, plus milk or half & half, to produce a rich and creamy pasta dish. The cheeses melt together smoothly, contributing sharp and mild flavors that blend with the alfredo's creaminess. The assembled pasta is placed into a disposable aluminum pan, optionally topped with extra cheese, and kept refrigerated or in a cooler up to three days before cooking. Cooking involves heating the pan over hot coals or an elevated fire until the cheese melts and the dish bubbles, providing a flavorful and comforting meal ideal for outdoor settings.

This dish works well as a hearty side or main course in camping or picnic contexts. The make-ahead aspect allows for easy preparation ahead of time. Adding a bit of mustard before cooking can provide a subtle tang to the flavor profile.

When storing in a cooler, sealing the pan inside a gallon-sized ziploc bag helps prevent water contamination during transport or storage.
