Candied Bacon

Candied Bacon is made by coating thick-cut bacon slices with maple syrup and brown sugar, then baking them until crispy. The process results in strips that balance salty, smoky bacon flavor with sweet caramelized coating and a few grinds of black pepper for contrast. This treat works well as a snack, breakfast addition, or garnish.

Description

This recipe involves laying thick-cut bacon in a single layer on a prepared baking sheet or rack, then drizzling maple syrup evenly over the slices followed by a sprinkle of brown sugar and black pepper. Baking at 350°F crisps the bacon while melting the sugars to form a sticky, flavorful glaze. The sugar caramelizes on the bacon surface, creating a sweet and savory combination with a pleasant crunch.

The candied bacon should be allowed to cool briefly after baking so it firms up and holds its shape. The balance of sweet and smoky works well alone or as a complement to other dishes like salads, sandwiches, or brunch plates. The texture is crisp with slightly chewy centers depending on bacon thickness.
