Candied Yams

Candied Yams are sliced yams cooked slowly in butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, and pumpkin pie spice until tender and coated with a glossy, sweet sauce. This side dish combines soft, sweet yams with warm spices, producing a comforting and rich accompaniment for meals. The cooking method gently softens the yams while creating a thick, flavorful glaze.

Description

This recipe uses peeled, ⅓-inch thick slices of yams cooked in a skillet with butter to start. Brown sugar and a blend of cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice are added, melting into a sweet syrup as the yams cook. The heat is lowered and the mixture is covered and stirred regularly over about an hour, allowing the yams to soften without breaking apart.

The resulting dish has tender yam slices saturated with a thick, spiced sugary sauce. The cinnamon and pumpkin pie spice add aromatic warmth, while the butter and brown sugar create a rich, caramelized finish. The yams retain their shape but become soft and flavorful throughout.

Serve the candied yams hot as a traditional side dish, especially common with holiday meals. Leftovers keep well refrigerated and can be frozen for longer storage, maintaining their texture and sweetness when reheated gently.

Ingredients

Servings
  • ½ cup butter unsalted
  • 6 yams peeled and sliced ⅓" thick (approx 3 ½ pounds)
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon pumpkin pie spice
  • kosher salt to taste

Instructions

  1. In a large high-sided skillet, add butter and set over medium-high heat. When the butter is melted add the yams and toss to combine.
  2. Add the brown sugar and spices to the skillet. Stir to combine.
  3. When the sugar is melted, lower the heat to low and cover with a lid. Cook for an hour, stirring every 15 minutes.
  4. As the yams cook they will start to soften, so be careful when stirring that you don’t break up the yams.
  5. When the yams are fully cooked and the sauce is thick, add kosher salt to taste.
  6. Serve hot.

Notes

  • Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • Frozen candied yams keep well for up to one year.
