Cannoli Dip Recipe
Description
This dip starts by combining mascarpone and whole milk ricotta cheeses, which provides the creamy texture and necessary fat content, with powdered sugar and flavor extracts. The mixture is whipped thoroughly with a stand or hand mixer until thick and airy, going through an initial thin phase before becoming fluffy.
Mini chocolate chips are folded in to add texture and chocolate flavor throughout the dip. Once combined, the mixture is chilled to firm up slightly before serving. It is accompanied by various cookie dippers such as broken chocolate chip cookies, pizzelle, waffle cones, graham crackers, or cannoli shells to mimic the flavors of traditional cannoli in a loose form.
The dip is a rich sweetness fusion with a creamy consistency, perfect for parties or casual dessert occasions. It is advised not to prepare this dip too far in advance to avoid liquid separation; stirring before serving can restore texture at the expense of presentation.
Ingredients
- 8 ounces mascarpone cheese excess water drained off if needed, full fat
- 1 ½ cups ricotta cheese drained, whole milk
- 1 ¼ cup powdered sugar
- ¾ teaspoon vanilla extract
- ¾ teaspoon almond extract
- 4 Tablespoons mini chocolate chips
- chocolate chip cookie for serving, broken
- waffle cone
- pizzelle cookie
- graham cracker
- cannoli shell
Instructions
- Combine cheeses, extracts, and powdered sugar into a large mixing bowl of a stand mixer fit with a paddle attachment (or you can use a hand mixer). Whip on medium-high until thick and fluffy, about 5 minutes.
- Fold in 3 tablespoons of chocolate chips. Pour dip into serving bowl. Top with remaining chocolate chips. Let it set in fridge for about 1 hour and then serve with chocolate chips cookies.
Notes
- Use whole milk ricotta to achieve the proper fat content needed for a creamy and fluffy dip.
- Whip the cheese mixture thoroughly with a mixer; hand whisking may not provide the same fluffiness.
- The dip can separate liquid after a couple of days; stirring before serving can reintegrate the liquid but affect presentation.
- Feel free to add favorite cannoli toppings, such as chopped pistachios, to vary the flavor and texture.
- Serve chilled with your choice of cookie dippers like chocolate chip cookies, pizzelle, or cannoli shells.
