Caprese Grilled Cheese Sandwich

The Caprese Grilled Cheese Sandwich features layers of fresh tomato slices, shredded mozzarella, and prepared pesto between slices of bread buttered and seasoned with Italian herbs, baked until the bread is golden and the cheese melts. The sandwich offers a blend of creamy cheese, bright tomato, and aromatic pesto with a crisp exterior and tender, flavorful interior.

Description

This sandwich uses sourdough or similar bread spread with pesto sauce on both sides, layering shredded mozzarella cheese and fresh tomato slices seasoned with salt and black pepper. The sandwich is topped with more mozzarella before closing. The exterior of each slice is buttered and optionally sprinkled with Italian seasoning to enhance the crust during baking at 375°F.

Baking the sandwich in the oven for roughly 10-12 minutes, turning once, melts the cheese thoroughly and crisps the buttered bread evenly. This method gives the sandwich a uniform golden brown crust compared to pan frying. The blend of pesto, mozzarella, and tomato captures the classic Caprese flavors in a warm, gooey format.
