Caramel Apple Crumb Pie

Caramel Apple Crumb Pie features a tender pie crust filled with thinly sliced apples tossed in lemon juice, flour, brown sugar, and warming spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. The topping combines oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and cold cubed butter baked until golden and crisp. Drizzling caramel sauce on top adds a rich, sweet finish. This pie balances tartness and sweetness with a crunchy oat layer, making it a suitable dessert for gatherings or seasonal occasions.

Description

Caramel Apple Crumb Pie begins with a classic unbaked pie crust fitted into a 9-inch dish, chilled briefly to prepare for the filling. The filling is a mixture of peeled, thinly sliced apples coated evenly with lemon juice, flour, brown sugar, and a blend of ground cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, salt, and vanilla extract. This combination infuses the apples with gentle spice and helps thicken the juice released during baking.

The crumb topping includes old-fashioned oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt combined with cold cubed butter worked in until crumbly. This results in a golden, textured crust with crunchy bits after baking. The assembled pie bakes for 45 to 55 minutes at a moderate temperature until the crust is golden and the filling bubbles through, signaling doneness. If edges brown too quickly, covering loosely with foil prevents burning.

Once baked, the pie is best served slightly warm or at room temperature, with the option to drizzle caramel sauce on top for added decadence. This pie suits fall desserts or casual dinners, offering a comforting blend of tart apple and sweet spiced crumb. The oat topping adds a rustic crunch that contrasts with the tender fruit filling.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Apple Pie

  • 1 pie crust unbaked
  • 5 apple peeled and thinly sliced
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice fresh
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 3 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Crumb Topping

  • 1/2 cup old fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup butter cubed, cold
  • caramel sauce for drizzling on top

Instructions

To Make the Apple Pie

  1. Preheat oven to 375° F. Place the pie dough into a 9 inch glass or ceramic pie plate. Create a fluted crust with your fingers or crimp the edges with a fork. Refrigerate until the rest of the pie is prepped.
  2. Wash, peel, and thinly slice the apples, placing them in a large mixing bowl and tossing them in the lemon juice. Add the flour, sugar, spices, salt and vanilla to the apples and stir together until they are completely coated.
  3. In a separate bowl stir together all of the oat topping ingredients except the cubed butter. Once the topping ingredients are combined add in the cold cubed butter and work it into the mixture with your hands or a pastry blender until crumbles form.
  4. Pour the apples into the unbaked prepared pie crust. Top the apple filling with the oat topping. Bake the pie for 45-55 minutes or until the filling is bubbly and the crust is golden brown. If the crust and topping start to get too brown, place a piece of foil loosely over the top. I usually do this about halfway through the baking time.
