Caramel Apple Crumble Foil Packs
Description
This recipe layers diced apples mixed with butter cubes, brown and granulated sugars, cornstarch, and a blend of warming spices including cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and optional ginger-based spices. The butter is evenly cut into these ingredients before piling onto foil sheets. The crisp topping combines diced butter, brown sugar, oats, flour, and similar spices, cut in with a fork and spread atop the apples.
Sealed tightly, the packs cook quickly over medium heat on a grill or in a hot oven, steaming the apples until tender and the topping browns. This locking in of moisture and heat creates a softened, flavorful apple base with a contrast of crispy crumble.
Caramel sauce drizzled over before serving adds a salted sweetness, and optional whipped topping or ice cream provides a cool creamy complement. These packs are practical for outdoor or indoor cooking and easy cleanup.
Cooking times can vary widely based on equipment; watch closely to prevent burning and ensure tender apples. This recipe adapts a similarly styled microwave single-serve dessert but scales it for larger portions cooked by grill or oven.
Ingredients
Apple Layer
- 2 apple diced into 1/4-inch cubes (I did not peel mine, peel if you wish; I used Gala; Fuji, Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, or your favorite may be used, medium/large
- 1 tablespoon butter diced into small 1/8-inch sized cubes, unsalted
- ¼ cup light brown sugar packed
- 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
- 2 teaspoons cornstarch
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon cloves ground
- ground ginger pumpkin pie spice, cloves, allspice, etc. based on preferences, optional, pinches
Crisp Topping
- ¼ cup unsalted butter 4 tablespoons, diced into 1/8-inch cubes
- ¼ cup light brown sugar packed
- ¼ cup old-fashioned rolled oats whole
- ¼ cup all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon cloves ground
- ¼ teaspoon salt or to taste
- caramel sauce salted
- whipped topping optional for serving, or ice cream
Instructions
- Preheat grill to high (or preheat oven to 450F), place two large sheets of foil on the counter (approximately 12x18-inches); set aside.
Apples:
- To a medium bowl, add all ingredients, stir to combine.
- Cut butter into the dry ingredients with a fork, and distribute apple mixture evenly between the two sheets of foil in mounded piles; set aside.
Crisp Topping:
- To the same bowl, add all ingredients (except salted caramel sauce and whipped topping), stir to combine, cut butter into the dry ingredients with a fork, and evenly top the apple mounds with the crumble topping mixture.
- Seal up foil packs tightly around the edges to trap the steam in, place packs directly on grill grates, lower the heat to medium, close the grill cover, and cook for about 7 minutes, or until done (bake in the oven for about 15 minutes or until done).
- Place packs on a plate, allow them to rest for 1 to 2 minutes, and be careful when you open the packs (use oven mitts) because there is a lot of steam.
- Drizzle with salted caramel sauce to taste and optionally add whipped topping before serving. Recipe is best warm and fresh.
Notes
- Cooking time can range from about 7 to 15 minutes depending on your grill or oven's heat output; watch carefully to avoid burning.
- Use apples with firm flesh and balanced sweetness, such as Gala, Fuji, Honeycrisp, or Pink Lady; peel if preferred.
- Handle foil packs carefully after cooking, as steam inside will be very hot.
