Caramel Apple French Toast
Description
This recipe uses a loaf of French bread cut into thick slices and arranged in a baking dish. A custard mixture of eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla is poured over the bread, allowing it to soak thoroughly. Tart apples peeled and sliced are spread atop the soaked bread, then sprinkled with cinnamon, nutmeg, sugar, and brown sugar, which adds sweetness and a molasses note.
The dish is covered and refrigerated for at least an hour or up to 24 hours to allow flavors to meld and the bread to absorb the liquid. Baking at 350°F for one hour yields a golden brown exterior and soft, baked custard interior with baked apple slices warmed through and infused with spices.
After baking, the French toast is topped with caramel sauce, either purchased or homemade by melting caramels with whipping cream, to add a rich, sweet finish with buttery notes. This dish serves well as a comforting breakfast or brunch centerpiece.
Preparing the dish the night before simplifies morning routine, making it convenient for weekend breakfasts. Cover well while refrigerating to prevent drying.
Ingredients
- 1 loaf French bread
- 6 egg
- 1 1/2 cups milk
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1 Tablespoon vanilla
- 6 apple peeled, cored, and sliced (tart apples taste best
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- cinnamon to taste
- nutmeg to taste
- 1 jar caramel topping
Instructions
- Cut bread into large slices (about 3 inches wide) and arrange in a lightly sprayed 9x13 inch pan.
- In a large bowl beat together eggs, milk, sugar, and vanilla. Pour mixture over bread slices. Arrange apples on top of bread.
- Sprinkle cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugars (sprinkle the brown sugar the most generously) over the apples.
- Cover and refrigerate at least an hour and up to 24 hours.
- In the morning bake for 1 hour at 350 until golden brown.
- Top with your favorite caramel topping. Mrs. Richardson's Butterscotch Caramel is our favorite but even better than that is making it from bagged caramels: 1 pkg wrapped caramels and 2/3 cup whipping cream. Melt together in microwave.
Notes
- Prepare the dish the night before and refrigerate covered for up to 24 hours to enhance flavor and texture.
- Use tart apples for the topping as they hold texture and provide balanced flavor.
- You can top with store-bought caramel sauce or melt wrapped caramels with whipping cream for a homemade version.
