Caramel Apple Magic Bars

Caramel Apple Magic Bars are layered treats featuring a graham cracker crust topped with semisweet chocolate chips, caramel candies, chopped tart apples, and walnuts, all bound together by sweetened condensed milk and baked until set. They combine crunchy, chewy, and fruity textures with balanced sweetness and a hint of tartness from the apples, offering a rich dessert bar option.

Description

The recipe begins with a crust made from graham cracker crumbs mixed with brown sugar, cinnamon, salt, and melted butter, pressed firmly into a baking pan. This base provides a crisp foundation with a subtle cinnamon note that complements the toppings.

Layering chocolate chips, quartered caramel candies, chopped Granny Smith apples, and finely chopped walnuts creates multiple textures and flavors—melting chocolate, molten caramel, tart and tender apples, and crunchy nuts. Drizzling sweetened condensed milk over the layers binds the ingredients during baking, adding moisture and sweetness.

Baked until the edges are golden and the center is set, these bars cool to form a firm yet chewy treat. They can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for several days, making them convenient for dessert or snack use.

Choice of apples and nuts can be adjusted based on preference or availability without altering the core characteristics of the dish.

Ingredients

Servings

For the Crust

  • 2 cups graham cracker crumbs 12 whole graham crackers, crushed
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup unsalted butter melted

For the Bars

  • cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 30 caramel candy quartered, unwrapped
  • 2 apple peeled, cored, and coarsely chopped (about 8 ounces chopped, Granny Smith, medium
  • cups walnut finely chopped
  • 14 ounce sweetened condensed milk can

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Line a 9x13-inch baking pan with foil and spray with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Make the Crust: In a medium bowl, stir together the graham cracker crumbs, brown sugar, cinnamon and salt. Add the melted butter and stir with a fork until the mixture is evenly moistened. Turn the mixture out into the prepared pan and press into an even layer on the bottom of the pan.
  3. Assemble the Bars: On top of the crust, sprinkle the chocolate chips, caramels, chopped apple, and walnuts (in that order). Drizzle the sweetened condensed milk evenly over the entire mixture. Using the back of a spoon, gently press down on the mixture so that most of it is at least partially submerged in the milk.
  4. Bake the Bars: Bake until the edges of the bars are golden brown and the center is set, about 30 to 35 minutes. Allow to cool completely in the pan, then remove and slice into squares. The bars can be stored at room temperature in an airtight container for up to 5 days.

Notes

  • Using Granny Smith apples adds tartness that contrasts well with sweet components.
  • Finely chopping walnuts provides even texture distribution; pecans are a good substitute.
  • Homemade graham cracker crumbs made in a food processor offer better texture than crushed by hand.
  • Store bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
