Caramelized Onion Dip Recipe
Description
The recipe starts by gently caramelizing chopped yellow onions with garlic powder, salt, sugar, and black pepper in olive oil, developing a sweet and deep flavor over 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile, cream cheese is softened to a lukewarm consistency and blended with Greek yogurt to create a smooth base. Worcestershire sauce and finely grated Parmesan are stirred in to add umami and richness. Folding in the caramelized onions completes the dip, which can be topped with chives or crumbled bacon for texture and flavor contrast.
The dip has a creamy mouthfeel balanced by the sweet, savory caramelized onions and a hint of tang from yogurt. It works well served with potato chips, vegetable sticks, or pita, and can be used as a spread on baguette slices or in sandwiches and burgers.
To enhance results, chop onions finely for even caramelization and allow them to brown slowly without rushing. Softening cream cheese thoroughly ensures a lump-free smooth texture. Adding garlic powder and freshly ground pepper during onion cooking enhances flavor depth. Worcestershire and Parmesan are key for savoriness and should not be omitted.
Ingredients
- 2 TB olive oil
- 2 onion peeled and chopped, yellow
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp kosher salt
- 1 tsp granulated sugar
- ¼ tsp black pepper freshly ground
- 6 oz Greek yogurt plain
- 4 oz cream cheese regular, softened to lukewarm
- ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
- ¼ cup Parmesan Cheese finely grated
- chives Optional topping, or crumbled bacon, freshly chopped
Instructions
- In a large skillet, heat olive oil until hot, over medium high heat. Add onions, garlic powder, salt, sugar, and pepper. Stir to combine well. Continue cooking 15-20 minutes, stirring every 2-3 minutes. After each stir, shake pan to even out the mixture to a single layer so onions cook evenly. Once onions are soft and nicely browned, turn heat off and let rest.
- In a bowl, combine very soft cream cheese - microwave in 30-second increments to get it to a very-soft, lukewarm consistency - and yogurt. Use hand whisk to blend mixture together until smooth, without clumps.
- Add in the Worcestershire and parmesan, stirring to combine well. Add caramelized onions and stir to incorporate. Transfer to serving dish. Top with chives and bacon, if desired. Serve immediately or cover and chill until ready to serve.
Notes
- Chop onions finely to ensure even caramelization and sweetness.
- Cook onions slowly over medium-high heat, stirring regularly and spreading them evenly in the pan for best color and flavor development.
- Soften cream cheese to nearly lukewarm before mixing to avoid lumps and achieve a smooth dip.
- Include Worcestershire sauce and Parmesan cheese to deepen savory notes; do not omit these ingredients.
- Serve the dip with potato chips, vegetable sticks, pita chips, or use it as a sandwich or burger spread.
