Carrot Fries
Description
To prepare Carrot Fries, whole carrots are cut to desired fry-like shapes and coated in olive oil for fat that aids crisping during baking. Cornstarch is added as a light coating to absorb moisture and enhance the crispy texture. Garlic granules and salt provide seasoning. Baking at 400°F, the fries are flipped halfway through cooking to promote even browning.
The finished fries have a crispy outside with a slightly tender inside, delivering a subtle garlic flavor complementing the natural sweetness of carrots. This dish can be served as a side or snack and pairs well with various dips or sauces.
For best results, avoid overcrowding the baking surface so carrots roast rather than steam, and cut fries evenly to ensure uniform cooking. The recipe notes that cooking time depends on fry thickness and oven characteristics. A small amount of oil is necessary to achieve crispness, as carrots alone roast less crisply.
Ingredients
- 1 pound carrots washed and dried
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 tablespoon corn starch
- garlic granules a few shakes
- salt to taste
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F and line a large baking sheet with a silicone mat or parchment paper. Set aside.
- Cut the carrots to the length and thickness of your preference to resemble fries.
- Place the carrots in a large bowl and add the oil. Toss until all of the carrots are coated with the oil.
- Add the cornstarch, garlic granules, and salt. Mix until the cornstarch is evenly distributed on the carrots.
- Add the carrots to the prepared baking sheet and bake for 15 to 20 minutes. Carefully remove the tray from the oven and flip the carrots. Return the tray to the oven and bake for 15 minutes or until golden and crispy.
Notes
- Do not skip oil; it is essential for achieving crispier carrot fries as carrots alone roast less crisp than potatoes.
- Avoid overcrowding the baking sheet or air fryer basket to prevent steaming and ensure crispy fries.
- Cut fries evenly, aiming for about ¼-inch thickness, for even cooking and optimal texture.
- Cooking times vary based on fry thickness and oven or air fryer; monitor at the end to prevent burning.
