Chai Syrup
Description
The Chai Syrup recipe involves dissolving a mix of white and light brown sugars in water, simmering it briefly, then infusing it with chai spice or chai tea bags. Vanilla extract is added after removing from heat to maintain its aroma. Straining removes the spice solids, resulting in a clear syrup with a distinct spicy and sweet flavor. The process emphasizes careful timing to avoid bitterness from overcooked spices.
This syrup can be used to sweeten teas, coffees, or cocktails, adding a warm chai flavor without the need to brew fresh tea. It's versatile for use in drinks or drizzled over desserts. The vanilla adds a subtle richness complementing the chai spices.
Practical tips include not adding spices before sugars dissolve to prevent bitterness, cooling the syrup before handling for safety, and storing it in sanitized containers refrigerated for up to a month. Adjusting the type of sugar or flavor extracts can modify the syrup's taste and color.
Ingredients
- 1 cup water
- 1 cup granulated sugar white, 200g
- ½ cup light brown sugar 100g
- 2 teaspoons chai spice or 2 chai tea bags
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
Instructions
- Stir the sugars and water together in a pot, bring to the boil, then reduce the heat to a simmer for 5 minutes.
- Add the chai spice and cook for a further 5 minutes.
- Remove from the heat, stir in the vanilla and allow to cool.
- Strain in a fine mesh strainer (or mesh bag) over a bowl.
- Pour into a jar or bottle and keep in the fridge for up to 4 weeks.
Notes
- Add spices only after sugars have fully dissolved to prevent bitterness.
- Allow syrup to cool sufficiently before handling to avoid burns.
- Store syrup in a sanitized jar or bottle in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks.
- Strain syrup twice if a lighter color is desired to remove fine spice particles.
- Replace vanilla extract with almond or maple extract for flavor variation.
- Use chai tea bags as a substitute if homemade chai spice mix is unavailable.
- Increase specific spices to taste for stronger flavor.
- Use only brown sugar for a deeper caramel flavor.
