Cheddar Cheese Fondue

This cheddar cheese fondue blends sharp cheddar with creamy Laughing Cow cheese, melted gently in a broth and milk base flavored with lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and dry mustard. The texture is smooth and velvety, perfect for dipping bread or vegetables. The careful low-heat cooking prevents separation and creates a luscious, comforting cheese sauce.

Description

In this Cheddar Cheese Fondue, a mixture of beef broth and milk provides a flavorful and balanced liquid base. Lemon juice is added to stabilize the cheese, while Worcestershire sauce and garlic introduce subtle savory depth. Dry mustard contributes a gentle tang and emulsifying effect. Cornstarch is used to thicken the sauce and maintain a smooth consistency as the sharp cheddar cheese and creamy Laughing Cow wedges slowly melt in at low heat.

The gentle warming avoids boiling, preventing the cheese from clumping or separating. The fondue is ideal for serving as a warm dip for crusty bread, vegetables, or other dippables, offering a rich, creamy experience with a mild sharpness from the cheddar balanced by the smooth Swiss-style cheese.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 1 1/2 cups beef broth (beer or wine can also be used)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice (this will help the cheese to not separate, you won't taste it)
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1-2 cloves garlic crushed
  • 2 teaspoon dry mustard mustard powder, ground
  • 3 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 6 cups cheddar cheese shredded or cubed, sharp
  • 4 wedges Laughing Cow cheese original, creamy Swiss

Instructions

  1. In a fondue pot or saucepan over LOW heat, combine beef broth, milk, lemon juice, Worcestershire sauce, garlic, dry mustard, and cornstarch. Don't let it boil or even come to a simmer.
  2. When it is just warm enough to melt cheese gradually stir in the cheese and laughing cow cheese with a figure-8 motion.
  3. Add beef broth to thin if needed.
