Cheese Sauce for Broccoli (Easy and Smooth!)
Description
The preparation involves gently heating the milk and cream cheese in a pan and stirring continuously to melt the cheeses evenly without boiling. Garlic powder and a touch of cayenne pepper add subtle warmth and depth, enhancing the cheddar’s sharpness. Once melted and smooth, the sauce offers a velvety texture suitable for drizzling over steamed or roasted broccoli, Brussels sprouts, or even roasted potatoes, adding a creamy, savory layer to the vegetables.
Because the sauce depends on melting natural cheeses, careful temperature control prevents separation or curdling. It can be seasoned further with salt or additional cayenne to taste. The mild heat from the cayenne is optional but complements the cheese flavors well.
Leftover cheese sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to five days. Reheat gently to maintain its smooth texture.
Ingredients
- 8 ounces cheddar cheese shredded
- 4 ounces cream cheese
- 1 cup milk
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper
Instructions
- Set a sauté pan (or small sauce pot) over medium heat. Add in the milk, cream, cheese, garlic powder, and cayenne pepper. Stir as the cream cheese melts and reduce the heat if needed to make sure it does not boil.
- Once the cream cheese has melted into the milk, mix in the shredded cheddar. Continue to stir until the sauce is smooth.
- Taste and add salt or additional cayenne pepper, if desired. Serve over roasted or steamed, broccoli, or go crazy and serve over Brussels sprouts or roasted potatoes!
Notes
- Store leftover cheese sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
- Reheat gently to maintain smooth consistency and avoid curdling.
