Cheeseburger Casserole
Description
Cheeseburger Casserole consists of browned ground beef simmered in a tomato-based mixture that includes Worcestershire sauce, oregano, seasoning salt, and black pepper, providing a rich and slightly tangy flavor. Meanwhile, wide egg noodles are boiled until tender and combined with the meat sauce to integrate flavors. The mixture is transferred to a baking dish, topped with shredded sharp cheddar cheese, and baked until the cheese melts and mingles with the casserole.
The result is a comforting, layered dish marrying the savoriness of seasoned beef and melted cheese with the tender texture of noodles. The combination echoes familiar cheeseburger flavors in an easy-to-serve baked meal.
This casserole stores well; leftovers can be refrigerated or frozen and reheated by microwave or stovetop, with added tomato sauce if mixture becomes dry. Cooking noodles al dente is recommended to prevent softness after baking. The recipe can be doubled for making freezer meals, providing convenient future dinners.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 (29-ounce) can tomato diced with juice
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon oregano dried
- 1½ teaspoons seasoning salt Lowry's brand
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 8 ounces egg noodles wide
- 2 cups cheddar cheese grated, sharp
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F. Cook the ground beef in a large skillet over medium heat until no longer pink. Stir and break up lumps while the meat is browning.
- Once the meat has browned add the tomatoes, with the juice, the Worcestershire sauce, oregano, ½teaspoon, Lawry’s salt, and pepper. Bring it to a boil, then reduce the heat. Simmer the mixture for about 15 minutes.
- While the meat mixture is simmering fill a medium pot half full of water. Add 1 teaspoon salt and bring the water to a boil. Stir in the noodles and boil for about 8 minutes, until tender. Drain the noodles, then return the noodles to the pot and pour the tomato mixture over the noodles. Stir until blended.
- Spray a 9x13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and add the noodle mixture. Top with cheese. Bake for about 15 minutes, until the cheese is melted.
- Enjoy this meal with your family. Refrigerate any leftovers.
Notes
- Assemble casserole ahead and refrigerate up to 2 days or freeze for up to 3 months; thaw before baking.
- Store leftovers airtight in refrigerator for 2-3 days or freeze for 1-2 months; reheat with added tomato sauce if dry.
- Cook noodles to al dente to maintain texture after baking.
- Double the recipe to create a freezer meal for later use.
- Brown meat thoroughly and drain excess grease for best flavor and texture.
