Cheeseburger Sliders With Hawaiian Rolls (Crowd Favorite!!)

These Cheeseburger Sliders on Hawaiian sweet rolls use lean ground beef seasoned with Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and pepper, baked in a casserole dish for easy layering. Caramelized onions add sweetness and depth, topped with American cheese slices before assembling the sliders. The rolls are brushed with melted butter and sprinkled with sesame seeds, then baked to finish, resulting in soft, savory mini sandwiches with melted cheese and flavorful beef.

Description

The recipe combines lean ground beef with seasoning and spreads it evenly in a baking dish where it is cooked and drained of excess liquid. Meanwhile, diced yellow onions are caramelized in a skillet with occasional water added to deglaze and ensure even browning, providing a sweet contrast to the savory beef.

The baked beef is layered on the bottom halves of Hawaiian sweet rolls, topped with caramelized onions and cheese slices, and capped with the top halves. Brushing the tops with melted butter and sprinkling sesame seeds enhances flavor and texture. Baking the assembled sliders crisps the tops slightly and melts the cheese.

This method simplifies slider preparation for gatherings, offering a balance of sweet rolls, savory beef, melted cheese, and rich onions. They are best served warm as handheld appetizers or meal accompaniments.

The recipe also offers tips for make-ahead preparation, how to reheat sliders without drying them out, and suggestions to avoid sogginess by draining beef fat and liquid.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 lb. ground beef I used 93/7, lean
  • 2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce 30g
  • 1 Tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
  • 1 yellow onion diced, medium, 210g
  • 6 lices American cheese
  • 12 Hawaiian sweet rolls
  • 2 Tbsp butter melted, 30g
  • 1 Tbsp sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. Mix together the beef, worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Press down into an even flat layer in a greased 9x13-inch dish.
  3. Bake for 20 minutes. When done, drain the liquid and set the cooked beef aside.
  4. Meanwhile, make the caramelized onions. Spray a medium-sized skillet with cooking spray and set to medium heat. Add the onions; spray the tops of the onions with cooking spray and sprinkle with salt. Cook, stirring frequently, until starting to brown. Add a tablespoon of water and stir to deglaze the pan and continue cooking. Repeat this step 1-2 times until onions are browned and cooked to liking.
  5. Slice the rolls in half horizontally. Place the bottom half in the same baking dish (wipe down with a paper towel and spray with cooking spray first). Place the cooked beef on top of the bottom rolls then top with the caramelized onions and cheese, and then the top rolls.
  6. Brush the tops of the rolls with melted butter and sprinkle the sesame seeds on top. Bake for 5-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and buns are toasted to liking.
  7. Slice into 12 individual sliders, then serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Using lean ground beef such as 93/7 helps reduce excess liquid that could make the sliders soggy; 96/4 can reduce fat content further with similar protein and carb levels.
  • To prepare ahead, assemble the sliders through step 5, then cover and refrigerate until baking; increase bake time by 2-3 minutes if baking directly from chilled.
  • Reheat individual sliders in the microwave uncovered for 15-20 seconds just until beef is heated and cheese melts to avoid dryness.
  • Drain fat and excess liquid from cooked beef before layering to prevent soggy buns.
  • Apply sesame seeds immediately after brushing melted butter to help them adhere to slider tops.
  • Bake sliders uncovered to avoid moisture buildup that can cause the rolls to sweat and become soggy.
