Cheeseburger Tator Tot Casserole Recipe

Report
This casserole layers cooked ground beef with ketchup, mustard, and Worcestershire sauce, topped with tater tots and shredded cheddar cheese. The baked dish results in a combination of savory beef and crispy potato textures with melted cheese binding the flavors. It offers a simple, comforting meal suitable for family dinners made ahead or served fresh.

Description

The Cheeseburger Tator Tot Casserole starts by browning lean ground beef with chopped onions, then stirring in condiments like ketchup, yellow mustard, and Worcestershire sauce along with seasonings to create a flavorful meat layer. After heating through, shredded cheddar cheese is mixed in while warm. The meat mixture is spread in a baking dish and topped with a single layer of frozen tater tots, which crisp up during baking.

After baking uncovered for about 25 minutes, more shredded cheddar is sprinkled on top for an additional 5 minutes. The result is a casserole with a melted cheese layer atop crispy tater tots resting on a savory and saucy beef mixture with familiar cheeseburger flavors.

This meal works well for casual dinners and leftovers refrigerate well. It can be paired with a fresh salad or steamed vegetables to complement the richness of the casserole.

The casserole can be assembled ahead of time without adding the tater tots, then refrigerated until baking, which helps when planning meals for busy days.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 2 pounds ground beef (lean)
  • 1/2 onion (chopped)
  • 1/2 cup ketchup
  • 2 Tablespoons yellow mustard
  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 bag tater tots 32 ounces, frozen
  • 3 cups cheddar cheese shredded

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit and spray a 9X13 baking dish with non-stick cooking spray.
  2. Add the ground beef and diced onions to a large skillet and heat over medium high heat.  Cook, breaking up the beef as it cooks, until the beef is no longer pink.
  3. Drain any excess grease from the pan.
  4. Stir the ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, pepper and garlic powder into the pan and heat for 3-4 minutes until the sauce is heated through.
  5. Remove the pan from the heat and stir in 2 cups of the shredded cheddar cheese.  Allow the heat from the meal to melt the cheese.
  6. Spread the beef mixture into the bottom of the prepared 9×13 baking pan.
  7. Place one layer of tator tots on top of the beef mixture in the pan.
  8. Baked for 25 minutes uncovered.
  9. Sprinkle the top of the casserole with the remaining shredded cheddar cheese on top and bake for 5 more minutes until the cheese is melted.
  10. Remove from the oven.  Let the casserole sit for 10-15 minutes and then it’s ready to serve and enjoy!

Notes

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 5-6 days to maintain quality.
  • This casserole can be prepped in advance by assembling the beef mixture and layering it in the baking dish, but add the tater tots just before baking to keep their texture.
