Cheesy Chicken Stuffing Casserole
Description
In this Cheesy Chicken Stuffing Casserole, chicken breasts are placed in an 8x8 inch baking dish and covered with a mixture of cream of chicken soup and milk. Sliced mozzarella cheese is layered on top, followed by dry stuffing mix, and finished with melted butter poured over the stuffing. The casserole is baked at 350°F for about one hour, until the chicken is cooked through and the stuffing turns golden brown.
The dish offers a combination of tender chicken with creamy, cheesy layers and a crisp-topped stuffing that adds texture. The richness from the cream soup and butter balances the savory flavors, creating a satisfying comfort food.
This recipe can be varied by swapping chicken breasts with thighs or using different stuffing brands and cheeses like cheddar, Swiss, or provolone. Cream of mushroom or celery soup can also substitute for cream of chicken.
Ingredients
- 10.75 oz cream of chicken soup canned
- ½ cup milk
- 1 mozzarella cheese slices, 8 oz package
- 2 cups stuffing mix dry
- ½ cup butter melted
- 1 pound chicken breast boneless skinless
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Spray a square 8x8 inch baking dish and set aside.
- In a medium sized mixing bowl mix together milk and cream of chicken soup.
- Place chicken breasts in prepared glass baking dish. Pour chicken soup mixture over chicken breasts. Layer cheese on top and then sprinkle stuffing over the cheese. Pour butter over the stuffing mix.
- Bake for 1 hour or until chicken is cooked through and stuffing is golden brown.
Notes
- Try chicken thighs instead of breasts or mix the two for variety in flavor and texture.
- Choose stuffing mix with seasonings included for best flavor.
- Cream of chicken soup can be replaced with cream of mushroom or celery soup based on preference.
- Replace mozzarella with other melting cheeses such as cheddar, Swiss, Gruyere, or Provolone to change the dish’s character.
