Chef Salad
Description
The Chef Salad assembles torn romaine lettuce with sliced or wedged tomatoes, thinly sliced cucumber, and red onion. Topping the greens are cubed or sliced ham and turkey, crumbled cooked bacon, cubes of Swiss and Cheddar cheese, and hard-boiled eggs cut into halves or quarters. Optional additions include croutons, black olives, hot peppers, and green peppers, which contribute extra texture and flavor.
This salad offers a substantial mix of protein, vegetables, and cheese, making it suitable as a complete meal or a filling side. The accompaniments of Thousand Island or ranch dressing complement the savory and fresh components. Each ingredient is prepared simply and arranged over the lettuce for easy serving.
While it can be assembled a few hours ahead, it is best to keep dressing separate and add just before eating to maintain crispness. Leftovers can be refrigerated for a few days if stored without dressing, preserving freshness.

Notes
- Chef Salad often contains deli meats, cheese, eggs, and fresh veggies with a choice of dressings, similar yet distinct from Cobb salad.
- If assembling ahead, keep dressing separate and add just before serving to prevent sogginess.
- Leftovers can be stored refrigerated for a few days when dressing is kept apart.
