Chex Mix Recipe

This Chex Mix blends corn and rice Chex cereals with pretzels, garlic chips, and peanuts, coated in a buttery seasoning mix featuring Worcestershire sauce, garlic, onion powder, and seasoned salt. The mixture is microwaved for a crisp, savory snack with a satisfying crunch. It’s a versatile snack that can be adjusted with favorite mix-ins and seasoned to taste.

Description

The Chex Mix Recipe combines an equal mix of corn and rice Chex cereals with bite-sized pretzels, garlic chips or Melba toast pieces, and peanuts, creating a crunchy, multi-textured base. A melted butter mixture flavored with Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and onion powder is poured over the dry ingredients and stirred thoroughly. The mix is then microwaved in intervals, stirring occasionally, to allow the seasoning to coat the mix evenly and to crisp the snack throughout. This process results in a savory, crunchy snack with a blend of salty and garlicky notes.

The presence of Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder imparts a deep umami flavor, contrasting nicely with the crispy texture of cereals and pretzels. This snack is ideal for sharing at gatherings or as a flavorful nibble alongside drinks. It stores well at room temperature in an airtight container, maintaining its crispness for a few days.

Variations can be made by changing nuts or substituting different crunchy mix-ins like rye chips or bagel chips. Adjusting the amount of seasoning or variety of mix-ins allows customization to personal taste.

The recipe yields around 12 cups of mix, suitable for multiple servings, making it practical for parties or casual snacking. Cooling on paper towels after microwaving helps retain the desired crunch.

Ingredients

Servings
  • 4 cups corn chex cereal (see note 1)
  • 4 cups rice chex cereal
  • 2 cups pretzels bite-sized
  • 2 cups garlic chips or Melba toast, broken into pieces.
  • 1 cup peanuts (see note 2)
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 teaspoons seasoned salt
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder

Instructions

  1. In a large microwave-safe bowl, combine Chex cereal, pretzels, garlic chips, and peanuts.
  2. In a small bowl, microwave butter until melted, about 30 seconds. Stir in Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, garlic powder, and onion powder until blended.
  3. Pour the melted butter mixture over the cereal in 3 batches, stirring well after each addition.
  4. Microwave the Chex mix on HIGH for 6 minutes, stirring every 2 minutes. Spread the Chex mix on paper towels to cool. Store in an airtight container at room temperature.

Notes

  • Skip Wheat Chex if you prefer; about 8 to 9 cups of cereal total helps achieve the right mix.
  • Peanuts are preferred over mixed nuts; cocktail peanuts work well.
  • Garlic rye chips or Melba toast bits add good crunch and flavor; you can break them up for smaller children.
  • Store the finished mix in an airtight container at room temperature for up to four days to maintain crispness.
