Chicago Hot Dogs
Description
This recipe details the traditional Chicago-style hot dog, starting with steaming the beef hot dogs and poppy seed buns to achieve a soft and warm texture, though grilling or frying the dogs is an acceptable variation. The hot dog is placed in the bun and topped sequentially with a ribbon of yellow mustard and sweet relish, followed by finely chopped onions.
Tomato slices, cut in halves, are arranged on one side of the hot dog in the bun, while a dill pickle spear rests opposite the tomatoes, providing contrasting fresh and tangy notes. Sport peppers add a distinct spicy touch, and celery salt finishes the assembly with a subtle herbal seasoning. The result is a layered combination of juicy, crunchy, tangy, and spicy elements characteristic of the classic Chicago hot dog.
Steaming instructions for both buns and hot dogs emphasize the importance of gentle heat and moisture to maintain texture without drying or toughening the ingredients. This preparation supports replicating the tender, pliable qualities typical of an authentic Chicago dog.
Ingredients
- 4 all-beef hot dogs steamed is traditional, but grill or fry if you prefer
- 4 poppy seed buns steamed or toasted
- yellow mustard
- sweet relish
- onion finely chopped
- 4 tomato slices
- 4 dill pickles spears
- 8 sport peppers
- 1 tsp celery salt
Instructions
- Place a hot dog in each poppy seed bun.
- Run a ribbon of yellow mustard down the length of each hot dog.
- Top with sweet relish.
- Add chopped onions over the relish.
- Cut each tomato slice in half, and arrange the two halves against one side of each hot dog, along the bun.
- Place the dill pickle spear along the hot dog on the opposite side from the tomatoes.
- Add sport peppers on top of the hot dog.
- Sprinkle a good pinch of celery salt over everything and serve asap!!
Notes
- Steaming buns softens them, making them warm and pliable for easy eating.
- Steam hot dogs in a steamer basket above boiling water for 5-7 minutes until heated through.
- Wrap buns loosely in foil while steaming to allow moisture circulation without sogginess.
- Serve hot immediately after assembly for best texture and flavor balance.
