Chicken Bacon Apple Burgers
Description
The Chicken Bacon Apple Burgers recipe combines lean ground chicken with uncooked diced bacon, finely diced red onion, and apple pieces that are cooked briefly together to soften and integrate their flavors. Fresh dill, salt, and black pepper are added before forming patties. Cooking the burgers in a skillet with olive oil results in a well-browned exterior and juicy interior. Pressing the patties slightly in the center before cooking helps them maintain shape and cook evenly.
The resulting patties offer a combination of savory, smoky bacon flavor with sweet apple and aromatic dill, creating a complex and balanced taste. They can be served on hamburger buns with slices of cheddar cheese and a variety of condiments, including lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, or additional apple slices or chutney for extra texture and taste.
To ensure thorough cooking, the internal temperature should reach 165°F. This recipe is naturally gluten-free and dairy-free as prepared if buns or cheese are omitted or substituted accordingly. The notes provide calorie information for just the patty portion, indicating attention to nutritional detail.
Ingredients
- 1 lb. chicken breast I used 98% lean, ground
- 4 lices Bacon uncooked & diced
- 1/2 red onion finely diced, medium, 135g
- 1 red apple finely diced, medium, 150g
- 3 Tbsp dill freshly chopped
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp black pepper
- 2 Tbsp olive oil divided
Optional For Serving:
- 4 Hamburger Bun
- 4 cheddar cheese slices
- Condiments of choice like lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, sliced apples, apple chutney, bacon, etc!
Instructions
- Add 1 Tbsp of olive oil to a skillet and set to medium heat. Once shiny, add the bacon and red onion. Cook for 3 minutes then add the diced apples. Continue cooking for another 2-4 minutes or until the apple has softened and bacon is slightly cooked. It won’t be fully cooked or crispy. Transfer to a medium bowl.
- To the same bowl, add the ground chicken, chopped dill, salt, and pepper. Mix well to combine. Then form into five even patties with your hands. Slightly press down on the centers of the patties with your thumb. (Burgers expand in the middle as they cook, so pressing the centers down helps them to cook more evenly).
- Wipe the skillet clean with a paper towel. Add the remaining 1 Tbsp of olive to the skillet and heat over medium heat. Add burgers so they are not overcrowded (you may have to do multiple batches) and cook for 5-6 minutes. Then flip and cook for another 3-4 minutes or until the internal temperature is 165 degrees F or the center is no longer pink.
- Toast bun, if desired, then add your favorite toppings! I love light mayo, tomato, lettuce and cheddar cheese. Apple Cabbage Slaw or Apple Chutney would also be tasty on this!
Notes
- The patty mixture is naturally gluten-free and dairy-free as written, providing a versatile option for various diets.
- Pressing the center of each patty before cooking prevents uneven puffing and helps them cook uniformly.
- Bacon and apple soften during initial cooking but do not fully crisp before mixing into the meat, which enhances the integration of flavors.
