Chicken Gravy Recipe
Description
This chicken gravy combines broth, bouillon cube, soy sauce, onion powder, garlic powder, dried thyme, and ground sage to build a savory base. Cornstarch is mixed with cold water and whisked into boiling liquid, thickening the gravy upon simmering until the desired consistency is reached.
Adding a tablespoon of cold unsalted butter at the end imparts a glossy, silky finish. For a deeper color, a few drops of browning sauce can be stirred in. The gravy pairs well with roasted or baked chicken, adding moisture and flavor.
Optional additions like sautéed onions, shallots, or mushrooms can be incorporated for more depth. If chicken drippings are available, they can be used in place of or alongside broth, reducing or omitting the bouillon depending on salt preference.
Ingredients
- 2 cups chicken broth
- 1 chicken bouillon cube or 1 tsp better than bouillon
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce you can’t taste it, but it enhances the flavors, low sodium
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ¼ teaspoon thyme dried
- ¼ teaspoon sage ground
- 1/4 cup water cold
- 3 tablespoons corn starch
- 1 Tablespoon butter cold unsalted
Instructions
- Add the chicken broth, soy sauce, bouillon, and seasonings to a medium pot.
- Combine the cold water and corn starch in a small Tupperware with a lid. Shake to combine.
- Bring gravy to a boil and whisk in the cornstarch mixture. Reduce heat to medium low. Continue to whisk to ensure that it blends in smoothly.
- Let it gently simmer until its of desired thickness. The longer it simmers, the more concentrated the flavor will be.
- Remove from heat. Swirl in one tablespoon COLD butter just before serving. This adds a silky, velvety finish.
- Pro Tip: If a darker color is preferred, add 1-2 drops of Kitchen Bouquet browning and seasoning sauce.
Notes
- If using chicken drippings, combine them with broth to make 2 cups and adjust or omit bouillon based on taste.
- Reduced-sodium broth and bouillon can be used to control salt levels.
- Sautéed onions, shallots, or mushrooms can be added for extra flavor depth.
- For darker gravy, add 1-2 drops of browning and seasoning sauce before serving.
