Chicken Gravy Recipe
Description
The recipe begins by dissolving chicken bouillon cubes in heated chicken stock to form a well-seasoned base. Butter is melted in a saucepan, combined with all-purpose flour and herbs—thyme and sage—to create a roux that thickens the gravy and adds depth. The hot stock is gradually whisked into the roux to prevent lumps and cooked until the mixture reaches a smooth, thickened sauce. Salt and pepper are adjusted at the end to taste. The gravy is served immediately to accompany chicken or other savory dishes.
This basic gravy offers a balanced herb and chicken flavor with a velvety texture, suitable for spooning over cooked poultry, mashed potatoes, or vegetables. The use of bouillon cubes allows for quick preparation without sacrificing savory intensity.
Ingredients
- 2 c chicken stock or broth
- 2 cubes chicken bouillon
- 4 tbsp butter unsalted
- 1/4 c all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp thyme
- 1/4 tsp sage
- salt to taste
- black pepper to taste
Instructions
- Use a microwave safe bowl or measuring cup. Add the stock and the bouillon cubes, then heat for 1 minute and stir. Repeat heating until the bouillon is dissolved.
- In a saucepan over medium-high heat melt the butter. Add the flour, thyme, and sage and cook for 1 minute. Slowly whisk in the hot stock/bouillon cube until smooth. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer. Cook, whisking, until smooth and thick, about 1 minute.
- Remove from heat, then salt and pepper to taste. Serve immediately.
