Chicken Parmesan Burgers
Description
The patties begin with finely diced onion and minced garlic cooked gently in olive oil to soften and mellow their flavors. Ground chicken is mixed with these aromatics, seasoned breadcrumbs, grated Parmesan cheese, milk, chopped parsley, and Italian seasoning to form moist, flavorful patties. Cooking methods include pan-frying in an oven-proof skillet, grilling, or air frying, ensuring the internal temperature reaches the safe 165°F mark.
Once cooked, each patty is topped with warmed marinara sauce and a mixture of shredded mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses. A brief broil melts the cheese and slightly browns it for a savory finish. The burger buns are spread with garlic butter and toasted under the broiler for crispness and flavor. Assembly includes placing the patties on the buns and adding fresh basil leaves and tomato slices if desired.
This recipe offers flexibility in cooking methods and emphasizes not overworking the meat mixture to keep patties tender. Cooking the onion separately enhances flavor and texture. Leftover patties can be reheated gently. The garlic butter toast adds an appealing contrast to the juicy burger.
Ingredients
Chicken Patties
- 2 tablespoons olive oil divided
- ¼ cup onion finely diced
- 1 clove garlic minced
- 1 pound ground chicken
- ¼ cup seasoned bread crumbs
- ¼ cup Parmesan Cheese grated
- 2 tablespoons milk
- 2 tablespoons parsley chopped, fresh
- ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning
Topping
- ½ cup marinara sauce
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese shredded
- 1 ½ tablespoons Parmesan Cheese shredded
- 1 tablespoon butter or butter, with garlic
- 4 Brioche buns or hamburger buns
- basil and tomato slices for serving, optional, fresh leaves
Instructions
- Cook onion and garlic in 1 tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat until softened. Cool completely.
- Mix all patty ingredients in a medium bowl. Form into four ½-inch thick patties.
- Heat remaining olive oil in an oven-proof skillet over medium heat and add patties. Cook 4-6 minutes per side or until they reach 165°F. (see notes for other cooking methods)
- Meanwhile, heat marinara sauce on the stovetop or in the microwave.
- Turn the broiler on to high.
- Spoon about 1 tablespoon marinara sauce over each patty. Top each with mozzarella cheese and parmesan cheese. Broil 1-2 minutes or until cheese melts.
- Spread garlic butter on the buns and broil 1-2 minutes or until lightly toasted.
- Place a chicken patty on each bun with tomato slices if using. Top with basil if desired and serve with remaining marinara sauce.
Notes
- Patty cooking times vary by method; air fry at 350°F for 11-15 minutes flipping once until 165°F internal temperature is reached.
- Grill patties over medium-high heat 6-8 minutes per side until fully cooked, monitoring temperature.
- Cook onion and garlic before mixing in for improved flavor and texture; alternatively, microwave softened onion with a splash of water if short on time.
- Use lean ground chicken but avoid extra-lean to maintain juicy patties and prevent dryness.
- Broil topped patties briefly to melt cheese and toast buns with garlic butter for added flavor and texture.
